Toby: the dog who thinks she’s a cat.
Toby is our rather over-weight lab/pit/terrier/husky…and God knows what else little dog. She weighs about 52 lbs. and is on Slentrol (diet drug for dogs) as she should weigh about 40 lbs. We adopted Toby from the North Shore Animal rescue of Long Island 7 years ago. She was about 5 months old when we got her and she has been a great friend.
Toby was raised by the 6 cats that we had at the time and somewhere along the way Toby changed her outlook from dog to cat! She has mothered and raised 6 kittens and she does not like dogs….especially not the sniffing part! She prefers cat food to dog food (ergo the weight problem), washes her face like a cat, and loves to chew bubble gum! She is built with a large (well, at least medium sized) body and the small legs of a terrier. Because of this genetic confusion Toby has really bad arthritis and has difficulty getting around. Her left back knee is totally ruined by the arthritus and could only be helped by a total knee replacement. So as her helpers, we do what we can with medicine, excercise and weight loss. Toby has lost about 10 pounds and is on a strict NO CAT FOOD diet….no matter that she insists that she is starving to death.
